An accessibility statement is a statutory document that organizations must publish to account for how their website or mobile app meets accessibility standards. The statement shall include a description of which parts of the website are accessible, what deficiencies exist, what actions are planned and contact details for reporting accessibility issues. For the public sector, accessibility statements are mandatory under the DOS Act and must be updated at least once a year or when major changes are made to the website. Private companies covered by the EAA will also be required to publish similar documentation from 2025. A good accessibility statement demonstrates transparency, responsibility and commitment to inclusion. It should be easy to find on the site and written in a language that is understandable to all users, not just technical experts.
