The Web Accessibility Directive is a 2016 EU directive that requires all public authorities' websites and mobile apps to be accessible in accordance with EN 301 549. The Directive affects public authorities, municipalities, regions and publicly funded organisations across the EU. In Sweden, the directive has been implemented through the DOS Act (Act on Accessibility to Digital Public Services). WAD requires public organizations to publish accessibility statements, offer accessible alternatives to inaccessible content, and have processes for dealing with complaints. The directive covers both existing and new websites as well as mobile apps, with specific deadlines for compliance. Non-compliance can lead to sanctions and demands for action from national regulatory authorities such as DIGG in Sweden.
